How to tell real from imitation
Real specimens look like
Pure red to slightly purplish-red, hexagonal silk inclusions visible under 10x loupe, hard scratch test passes (only diamond/moissanite scratch).
Common fakes
Glass-filled / lead-glass-filled ruby
Heavily included natural ruby fissures filled with lead glass to improve clarity and apparent colour.
Tell-tale sign · Gas bubbles visible at fissure interfaces under magnification; flash effect (blue/orange) when rotated under light.
Synthetic flame-fusion ruby (Verneuil)
Powdered alumina + chromium dropped through oxyhydrogen flame onto seed.

Composite (doublet/triplet) ruby
Thin slice of natural ruby cemented to synthetic corundum or glass base.
