What we actually know about Emerald (Beryl with Cr)
Every claim on this page is tagged with one of five evidence tiers. We separate what is mineralogically verifiable from what is classical, from what is modern belief, from what we ourselves doubt.
- •Beryl variety coloured by Cr³⁺ (and/or V³⁺ in non-Colombian).
- •Mohs 7.5-8 — durable but inclusion-stressed; chips easily at edges.
- •Specific gravity 2.67-2.78.
Verifiable by mindat.org / GIA / standard mineralogy.
- •Marakata described as the gem of Mercury (Budha), worn to align the intellect with clear expression. — Garuḍa Purāṇa, Ratna-parīkṣā chapter GP 1.78-80
Cited from a named primary source — Garuda Purana, Rasaratna Samuccaya, Brihat Samhita.
- •Set in gold; worn on right little finger on Wednesday morning.
- •Auspicious for students before exams, lawyers before arguments, writers before drafting.
Held in Jyotish, Reiki, or Western metaphysical lineages — not from primary classical text.
- •Heart-chakra opening (Western tradition; not classical Indian framing).
Popularised post-1980s. No classical or scientific support.
- •Eyesight improvement — no peer-reviewed evidence.
Siyara explicitly flags doubt about this claim.
What we do NOT claim
- — We do not claim emerald cures myopia or retinal disease.
Authenticity & Fakes
How to tell real from imitation
Real specimens look like
Rich green with characteristic 'jardin' (jardin = garden, the natural inclusions); slight bluish tint distinguishes from green tourmaline.
Common fakes
Green glass / synthetic spinel
Doped glass cast into faceted shape, or synthetic spinel grown.
Tell-tale sign · No jardin inclusions; perfect clarity is suspicious; warm to touch.
Synthetic hydrothermal emerald
Lab-grown beryl with same chemistry — VALID gem (not 'fake') but must be disclosed.
Tell-tale sign · Chevron growth pattern; identification requires gemologist or certificate.
Heavily oil-filled / resin-filled emerald
Natural emerald with severe fissures filled with cedar oil or resin to improve clarity.
Tell-tale sign · Flash effect under fibre-optic light; oil weeping when warmed.
30-second home test
Always insist on certificate — emeralds without disclosure of treatment are unsellable in any honest market.
Certificate to ask for (high-ticket)
When NOT to use
Times this stone is not the right choice
- ·Charts where Mercury is in Pisces (debilitation) without strong support — consultation required.
- ·If the wearer becomes sharp-tongued or critical, discontinue.
