How to tell real from imitation
Real specimens look like
Bright yellow to golden, exceptionally clear (clarity is the rule, not exception, for sapphire), high lustre.
Common fakes
Citrine quartz sold as 'yellow sapphire'
Heat-treated amethyst quartz, much softer (Mohs 7) and cheaper.
Tell-tale sign · Will scratch with sapphire (Mohs 9) but not vice versa; lower refractive index.
Yellow beryl (Heliodor)
Natural beryl, but a different planetary stone — not Jupiter's gem.
Tell-tale sign · Lower density (2.7 vs 4.0); requires gemologist confirmation.
Synthetic yellow sapphire
Verneuil flame-fusion or hydrothermal — VALID Jupiter stone if disclosed.
Tell-tale sign · Curved growth striae instead of angular natural zoning.
30-second home test
Hardness test — true sapphire scratches quartz cleanly. But certification is non-negotiable for navaratna purchase.
